Turnip Greens

This is a public service announcement: Unemployment has NOT improved under the Trump administration. There was no such thing as a homeless person in the 1970’s. And turnips are not radishes. The tops of turnips are nutritious and part of the African Heritage Diet I grew up on.

Turnip Greens

  • 3 Bunches Organic Turnip Greens
  • 1 Clove Organic Garlic
  • Water
  • 1 Tbs. Organic Safflower Oil
  • 1 tsp. Spike
  • 1 tsp. Vegetarian Beef Stock
  • 1 Dash Colgin Hickory or Mesquite Liquid Smoke
  • 1 Pinch Organic Sugar

Wash vegetables, chop greens and slice two to three turnips. Place into a sauce pan and add enough water just to cover. Add sliced garlic and seasonings. Turn stove to high bringing the pot to a boil. Turn heat to low and cook until turnips are soft, about 15 to 20 minutes – they do not require as much time as collards. Because turnip greens are sometimes bitter, many cooks add a pinch of sugar.
