Margaritea Cocktail

Margaritea Cocktail

After more than a year, I went into a Costco today, something that would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Even before we entered, Mom was cut off by a grey-haired male wonder who also clipped me in the behind without so much as an “excuse me” or “my apologies.” This area of town is populated with birthers, Boomers, QAnon espousing, snowbirds from the Midwest – Chumpers with the bumper stickers to prove it. Once inside I was hit yet again by a woman riding one of those 3 wheeled vehicles with a shopping basket attached, but she at least had the temerity to apologize. What in God’s name happened to civility, dignity, decorum and plain old fashioned manners? Why, my parents taught me to treat people with respect. We followed the golden rule, do unto to others what you would have them do to you. But most importantly, why are you retirees rushing about so? Tucker Carlson doesn’t come on until 6pm!

In my day, if a visitor stopped by we were obliged to be polite by offering a beverage of some sort. In keeping with my upbringing, I took a symbol of Southern hospitality in the guise of a sweet tea, then merged it with Jaliscos’ querida bebida Tequila, resulting in a new, hot weather wrangler just in time for summer – the Margaritea Cocktail. A derivative of the classic Margarita (which by the way should never, ever contain Cointreau) you will feel like you’re in Cabo even if you don’t leave the house.

The Master of Mixes Handcrafted Margarita Mixer is a real winner because it contains no genetically modified organisms (GMO), is gluten free, kosher, and vegan; the lime flavored cocktail mix also contains cane sugar and organic agave syrup which I greatly appreciate.

A couple of dozen Juicy Wings or some fried Guaymas Shrimp served with the Margaritea Cocktail would delight the pants off your Memorial Day guests, I assure you.

  • Tea Kettle or Saucepan
  • Two 48 oz. Glass Pitchers
  • Metal Stirrer or Long Handled Spoon

Ingredients

  • 6 cups Water
  • 6 tea bags Trader Joe's Black Mango Tea
  • Master of Mixes Margarita Mix
  • Patron Silver Tequila
  • 2 tbsp Organic Agave Syrup
  • 1 Lemon Lime may be substituted if preferred.

Instructions

  • Bring 3 cups of water to a rolling boil for at least one minute.
  • Pour the hot water over the 6 tea bags, cover and steep for at least 15 minutes.
  • Remove tea bags and allow to cool. Add 3 additional cups of chilled water, the juice of the entire lemon and the agave syrup.
  • Place pitcher in refrigerator to chill.
  • Pour 12 ounces of tequila into the 2nd pitcher and add 24 ounces of the chilled tea.
  • Add crushed ice to each six individual, 6 ounce, low ball glasses and pour the tea and tequila mixture about ¾ full. Add the margarita mix to taste – just a dash is sufficient for me but some may prefer their drink sweeter.
  • Add a stirrer or swizzle stick, garnish with a lemon or lime and serve.
