Hibiscus Tea

Hibiscus Tea

Since the entire world seems to be sweltering, we may as well cool off in a flavorful way. My next Summertime offering is Hibiscus Tea. Known as Sorrel in Jamaica or Agua de Jamaica in Mexico, Hibiscus Tea has many proven health benefits. High in Vitamin C, the deep crimson florets help lower blood pressure, blood sugar and even aid in weight loss.

Enjoyed hot or cold, you can find Hibiscus Tea blends in most grocery stores; I prefer to buy pure, loose flower petals which can be found in the bulk section of your local health food store. Simply heat water allowing to boil for at least 1 minute. Next add 1 teaspoon Hibiscus flowers per 8 ounces of water – place the flowers to a reusable tea bag or a tea ball if you’d like. Let everything steep for at least 10 minutes, remove the flowers and sweeten to taste. This tea is very SOUR without some type of sweetener. I use agave, again because a little goes a long way. Caffeine free, you can enjoy this day or night or perhaps try it the Jamaican way with ginger, allspice and rum. Yum!
