Power to the People

Power to the People

I suffer from high blood pressure. Situations at work, involving family members or my significant other can sometimes cause me so much anger my stomach feels like it’s on fire. So, yes I’ve been prescribed medication, but the prescription remains unfilled; I tried linden tea and a chinese blood pressure tea. None of these treatments worked.

I was invited to a women’s empowerment event last weekend to discuss the nexus between mental health and what we eat. Johns Hopkins psychiatrist Dr. Milena Smith began the day with a useful acronym for managing the stressors in our lives – NEST. Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep and Therapy she said, all contribute to balance and general wellness.

Studies at NIH and Harvard University indicate Omega-3 fatty acids are an effective therapy for mood disorders ranging from major depression and postpartum depression, to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Good sources are flaxseeds, wild-caught salmon, tuna, walnuts, basil, oregano, spinach and chinese broccoli (pictured above).

Serendipitously, I came across something that miraculously lowered my blood pressure after a mere two days of usage. A discussion about the source of my cure will appear in next week’s post.

Be Well!
