South American Gin & Juice

South American Gin & Juice

People in the United States believe that if a little of something is good, a lot of it is better. The South American Gin & Juice is a cocktail. Sure, by almost 2021, most adults realize that excessive alcohol consumption can lead to serious health issues. But, a lot of us do not know that over consumption of healthy, super foods can be just as damaging. As a somewhat typical United States citizen, I had to learn by traveling the hard route.

Moderation, with respect to the African American Heritage Diet, is one of the overarching principles. Calorie restriction and infrequent intake of meat or sugar are musts. The Low FODMAP Diet is a guideline that helps one avoid the foods that may trigger digestive problems. FODMAPs are certain types of carbohydrates found in even the healthiest of foods such as garlic, onions, watermelon and even cauliflower and its’ kissing cousin broccoli. Both of these diets note that more of a good thing is often not a good thing.

I had to de-program my American bred mind when I began the Low FODMAP Diet. My sensitive digestive system cannot tolerate a huge, baked sweet potato at lunchtime or specifically anytime. I can however stomach a 1/2 cup per day of the Vitamin A, beta-carotene laden, sweet potato without any discomfort. Seems to be a particular peculiarity passed down from Nana, to my Father and then to me – a sensitive stomach. Blame Madison Avenue and the hounds of capitalism perhaps for encouraging gluttony. “Hesitate, then moderate,” will be my mantra for 2021. If you plan on drinking the South American Gin & Juice New Year’s Eve, make some of Granny’s Deviled Eggs as well to prevent over consumption and keep the very, private party on track. Be safe, my friends!
